Calum Chambers has undergone knee surgery and Arsenal fear the results will indicate a long-term absence that would force Mikel Arteta’s hand in the January transfer window.

The centre-back was injured during the first half of Arsenal’s defeat to Chelsea on 29 December and had surgery on Thursday, with Arteta admitting the situation is “not looking good”. There are concerns Chambers will miss the rest of the season and the head coach said defensive reinforcements this month will become a greater priority if a lengthy lay-off is confirmed.
